Wrathing it up

I've had a few questions about the Wrath event in Wellington since I put up the original post so I thought I'd try to answer a few of them with a rambling post on here - it'll also be good to make August our busiest posting month so far with 16 posts! yayy Thrallblacks :)

Can Hordes play as well?
Long answer short: yup. By all means bring your Hordes army along. there obviously won't be a faction coin for you to take away but you still have a shot at the top spot if you think you can take it.

5 x 50pt games in a day???
Obviously you, and several other players would really have to be going some to get 5 in the day but, it all comes down to list choice and planning through your opponents turn. Know your models abilities and have a reasonable idea of theirs. We won't be playing timed turns or games  but there's nothing stopping you from doing so if you want to! If you get to 5 games then you deserve the bonus points! (we'll get onto the scoring for the day later)

A few tips for the day

  1. pre gen some lists. you obviously don't want to spend half the day trying to decide what your lists will be, write 2 or 3 lists and bring the models you need it'll speed up the pre-game setup a lot!
  2. remember your trench markers and terrain. I won't necessarily have time to sort out spares so you'll be poked if you end up fighting on a bare table!
  3. read the scenario! At 50 points it may well be easier to win by scenario than going for caster kill.
Trenches

you'll need one 5"by 8" command trench and ten 3" by 5" trench templates. When placing trench templates they must be in contact with another trench template.
A model completely within the area of one or more trench templates gains cover from attacks made by models not touching at least one of the trench templates the target model is in.
Models completely within a trench template do not suffer blast damage unless the origin of the damage is in a trench template they are touching.
When drawing LOS to a model not completely within one or more trench templates, ignore models completely within one or more trench templates.
Check out Prime/Primal page 90 for a handy diagram :)

Scoring

Here's the score sheet for the day, check out what you score points for. It's worth noting that you can't win both the first place coin and the best of faction coin unless the overall winner is the only player of their faction.
any question then drop me a mail or post a comment here.

Cheers

Being an Exemplar - or a good b'stard

I don't consider myself much of an authority on pretty much anything Warmahordes related. I offer my 2/5 win/loss record at this year's Call to Arms, my love for the classic Gorax and my ability to make ludicrous statements like "I played Menoth for 2 years before I bought the Avatar" as evidence for this. On the other hand I took away an award on the day and it's one I'm always proud to get. I was also stoked to share it with the Big Show - another good b'stard. It was great to see that we shared it with just 3 votes each and that there were votes spread right across the field. Good b'stards abound!

It may not sound like a terribly sporting thing to say, but I've won a few of these in my time (I'm not going to count but we're long past fingers and toes at this point) and as far as gaming goes, it's probably the one thing I can reliably say I'm good at! So what makes a good sport? For me it's about making sure you're having a good time and your opponent is too. This is a game after all and we can't be taking everything too seriously eh? Now this certainly doesn't mean that you shouldn't be competitive and it doesn't preclude stomping the other guy into the ground but if you do, don't be a dick about it. It also doesn't mean you can't be disappointed if you lose but don't have a little cry in the corner. Learn from your mistakes and come back stronger and smarter next time and win!

So I thought I'd share a few of my thoughts for good b'stard gaming:

1. It's just a game and should be treated as such. It's not life or death and winning doesn't improve the size of your package. If that's what you need, buy a sports car.
2. Read Page 5. If you're not playing Warmahordes, introduce players in other games to the Page 5 philosophy.
3. Excrement occurs. Sometimes your dice suck. Sometimes you're a quarter of an inch out. Let it go already!
4. Ask questions. If you don't understand what I'm doing, ask me. If you don't ask, don't complain!
5. Smack talk is part of the game for some people. Don't take it personally and if you're not into it, say so.
6. If your opponent is being a bad sport don't stoop to their level. Just play the game and walk away.
7. If you make a mistake, own it. If you get punished for it, take the lesson and move on.
8. J-flips are only okay if you're the man himself.
9. If you won, be gracious. If you lost, chillax! I won't rub the kicking you just got in your face if you don't tell me that the only reason I won was your bad luck.
10. Refer to number 1.

I had seven great games at CtA and I enjoyed all of them. All my opponents were fun to play (even Mr Baker) and I can only hope that they enjoyed the games as much as I did. I won a couple of games but also had some shockers, some good and some terrible dice, I made some appalling decisions (and the odd cunning ploy) and forgot a couple of things that might have gotten me over the line. In the end I can walk away feeling like I had a good time and I guess I can say that at least some of my opponents did to. That dorky grin on my face in the photo below is pretty well how I felt all weekend and that's how it should be.

So on that note shut your mouth pussycat and find me a macchiato, pronto!

WM players Dominate Wgtn Warlords club meeting

After being the strongest competition at Call to Arms 2011 it was not surprising that Warmahordes games vastly out numbered all other systems at the Wellington Warlords meeting following CTA.

;o)

Monday Update

And lo, did the Monday Update become a tradition, hallowed for all time.

... Or not really, but I think it's sweet.

First off, we have sweet stuff that fell off the train in the wake of Call to Arms;

Better pics of Daniel C's sweet addition to the Space Tick. Bitch to transport but cool to look at,

And Champion Local Greg F chops through the remainder of his Battlebox for Guardcon and starts on something new. Awesome painting and pretty inspiring as I vaccilate on what I feel like painting next,

From another local who should be making some more appearances here soon we have a Youtube Report from Luke B. This chronicles his part in the Club Challenge of yesterday where LOEN (League Of Extraordinary Nerdymen) wrested the win convincingly in all 3 major systems from the Auckland City Guard.

It does happen to be me playing so excuse the unpainted doods, I have too many for them to all be done,

So, Monday Updates will continue even in the temporary absence of a ridiculous bet, and I need your help to populate them with sweet stuff. Send in pics of what you paint or anything you think is awesome.

Also remember Guardcon is on the 1/2 October in Auckland so let me know if you're planning to come, it's Battleboxes and sure to be a fun time, just need to know how many people I'm expecting.

Big Kahuna on the upcoming Calendar however is Rallypoint on the weekend of the 12th November, It will be big and it will be awesome. 50pts, Flag scenarios only and you bring your two premade 'flags' which the painting prize will be judged on.

Until next time,

Keep it Classy.

Wrath Release event

With Call to Arms finished and away for another year we can all let out a big breath.. and start preparing for the next big event! :) In the meantime, I'm finally getting around to organising the Wrath Release event for Wellington.

The is a little different from the usual events that I've organised in that it's not the usual fixed round tourney format. For those who haven't read the release rules go to : http://privateerpress.com/files/Wrath%20Release%20Event.pdf
and take a look.

In essence it's a day of 50 point games with points scored for such things as using 2 Battle engines, using a Tier 4 list, only having Battlegroup models in your army - yes, a 50 point Battlegroup!! as well as some of the "softer" sides of the hobby that you don't usually see at  PP tourney/event - bonus points for using a fully painted army.. it's all in the document so go an d download it.

Theirs only one scenario and it reflects the trench warfare described throughout most of the Wrath fiction. Each player brings a HQ trench template, a number of standard trench templates and one piece of other terrain that's no bigger than 10" across. the aim of the scenario is to take your opponents command trench - or kill the caster - whichever!

It promises to be a great day of gaming with some great faction coins up for grabs!

So, "how can I get me a go at these great looking shinies??" I hear you cry! well, make your way to Cashmere Primary school, in Cashmere ave, Khandallah at 9am on Sunday the 11th September with a few of 50 point lists and the right number of photocopied or modelled trench markers (check out the last two pages of the rules linked above) and let loose the engines of war!!!!

drop me an email or comment on this post if you intend to turn up. Entry cost is $5 to cover the cost of the coins and another $5 table fee if you're not a Wellington Warlords member.

cheers

Legion at Call to Arms 2011

Yesterday I had knee reconstruction for a torn ACL, and I have the next 2 weeks or so off. So I have a little time on my hands...admittedly 80% will probably be sunk in to playing on the Xbox, but anyway. I didn’t get a podium at CTA but I had a blast and thought I’d write a brief synopsis of my games.

CTA was an escalation tournament with games played at 20, 30 and 40 points. I decided to take my Legion and my ‘main’ lists were built around Saeryn with an Angelius, Scythean and Swordsmen. I have quite a lot of experience with Saeryn and feel I know how she works.

I have long struggled vs Cryx (shakes fist in the air!) so my secondary list was built to combat a Cryx infantry horde, this also complimented the Saeryn lists nicely since the Saeryn lists excels against heavy beast/jack armies. These lists were built around eLylyth with a Ravagore, Nephalim Bolt Thrower, Death Stalkers and a unit of Striders. Typhon was added in at the 40 point mark. The idea was that this army would tear in to an infantry heavy army during turn one or two under eLylyth’s feat turn, even a dirty stealthed Cryx infantry horde. I hadn’t had much practice with eLylyth but I was still confident.

So with a rock solid plan in place I entered day 1:

Game 1 - 20pts vs Iain Johnston playing Cryx – can’t remember the scenario

This is funny because I play Iain almost every week. I was already fairly familiar with Iain’s lists, as he was mine. This was my chance to use my anti-Cryx list and pay them back for ever existing. Iain was playing Scaverous and Venethrax. I opted for eLylyth and he took Venethrax.

It was probably a bad match up at 20 points either way for Iain but the anti-Cryx list performed like I had dreamed it would and I ended up taking out a large chunk of Iain’s army in the second turn under my feat. This made it very difficult to defend Venethrax with his medium base from all my shooting in the following turn. Win to me.

Game 2 – 20 pts vs Chris Baker playing Cygnar - again I can’t remember the scenario

Chris had a pHayley list and a Darius list. I was sure in my mind that he would not risk taking the Darius list in case he faced Saeryn and would instead take pHayley to cast Temporal Barrier and prevent my fast beasts from charging. So I took eLylyth thinking I could out shoot the more infantry based pHayley list...and he took Darius.

I wasn’t really sure how I was going to deal with the heavies as is the one thing the eLylyth list struggles with. I did however know that what I ever I did I had to completely take a jack when I went for it to prevent it from benefiting from Darius’s feat. Long story short I was facing down (IIRC) an ARM 21 Stormclad and ARM 20 Ironclad who had run full tilt up the table. eLylyth dropped her feat, moved up, and tried casting Pin Cushion on the Ironclad, boosted and needing 7...and failed. I foolishly used my last 2 fury to try and cast it again...and failed. I left the Ironclad with 2 damage boxes which Darius happily dropped his feat to repair to full health. Then, eLylyth standing out in the middle of the table like a fool, took a Stormclad to the face. On reflection, taking out the Ironclad would still not have prevented eLylyth taking a Stormclad to the face...Oh well. Loss to me.

Game 3 – 30 pts vs Thomas Cole playing Cygnar – radial scenario where you needed to be B2B with the flag and control the zone in the opposite corner to get a CP.

Thomas had an eHayley list, and IIRC an eCaine list. The eHayley list had a few heavy jacks and Thorn in it and I was again ‘sure’ that my opponent would not risk taking it vs the Saeryn list, even with eHayley’s feat. So I thought he would take eCaine and I thought eLylyth would be a good matchup. So I took eLylyth and he took...eHayley.

Thomas concentrated on both the zone and the flag while I just moved up the centre and made sure I could prevent him from controlling the flag. Again my feat did little vs the heavier targets. Thomas scored an early point with Thorn on the flag. I killed Thorn and moved the Striders up, with one within 4” of the flag to contest it while Thomas firmly held the zoned with an Ironclad. At the beginning of his turn Thomas announced that he had won since he just needed to run the Centurion in to B2B with the flag to get the last CP. I pointed out the Strider was contesting it but Thomas (and Sean the TO) correctly pointed out that you could not contest the flag in this scenario. Thomas pointed out it was a moot point anyway since he was confident with Temporal Acceleration and Telekinesis that the charging Centurion could get to the Strider and kill it. Loss for me.

Game 4 – 30 pts vs Craig Bishell playing Circle – the scenario was two rectangular zones running vertically along in the middle of the table.

Craig was playing eKaya and Kromac. IIRC correctly both had a fair number of beasts, with the eKaya list almost made up entirely of beasts. I couldn’t risk playing the eLylth list against the eKaya list, and besides I was tired of her losing ways, so I opted for Saeryn. Craig took eKaya.

The first couple turns were a little cat and mouse like as we both tried to out manoeuvre each other, being weary to stay outside of each other’s threat ranges. Craig dropped his feat early but got little out of it. I charged my swordsmen up in to some Shifting Stones Craig had moved up field. The following turn he charged his Feral in to the Swordsmen. This was what I had been waiting for, I charged or ran my two Angelius and Scythean up field in to the zones, killing the Feral and damaging a Stalker. Saeryn dropped her feat and an Angelius scored a CP using Repulsion to push models out of one of the zones. The next turn Craig could not target my beasts in melee and I again used repulsion to score the remaining CP. Win to me.

So at the end of day 1 I was 2-2 and having some serious words with eLylyth, hinting at possible performance management.

Game 5 – 40 pts vs Casey playing Minions – scenario was one flag in each table half and you had to control the one in your opponents half.

I had played Casey’s Gators at NiCon in Hamilton where he assassinated Saeryn. He had a Barnabas list and a Carver list. Both were fairly beast heavy, especially the Gators, so I went with Saeryn. Casey chose Barnabas.

The game was a real slugfest. I went for his flag a number times but Barnabas was camping B2B with it, upkeeping Ironflesh. With unyielding boosting his ARM up to something ridonculous he was too tough to crack and decided to try and clean up the rest of his army. Time was called, neither of us had any CP, and neither of us had any models within 4” of the other’s flag so it went to the third tie breaker army points destroyed. I had destroyed 40 pts of Casey’s army and he 26 of mine. Win for me.

Game 6 vs Luke playing Circle – radial scenario where we each had a flag and zone, you had to control the flag and be in the zone to get points.

Luke had an eKaya list and a Kromac list. After my success with Saeryn vs Craig’s eKaya at the end of day 1 I opted for Saeryn again. Luke chosehis very beast heavy eKaya list.

There was a huge forest in the middle of the table which, ironic considering I was playing against Circle, gave me a huge advantage since all 3 of my heavies had eyeless sight and wings/pathfinder. This allowed me to set my beasts up in the forest, out of site of Luke’s beasts. My Swordsmen had run/charged some of Lukes stuff, generally tying the up. This set me up for the next where I charged out of the forest, dropping my feat, and scoring a CP with the Black Frost Shard on the flag. Saeryn had no Fury, but no problem since she was deep in the forest. I had the game all tied up...except that I forgot about the assassination run available to eKaya by running Laris up and then teleporting. Luke freed up Laris with the help of a Gorax and went for it. eKaya arrived on Saeryn’s doorstep with 4 Fury and a confident look in her eyes. With 4 Fury it was touch or go whether or not eKaya could kill Saeryn, even though Saeryn had no Fury to transfer with. Luke needed to boost to hit since Kaya is only MAT 6, he hit. He then boosted the damage at -3 needing a half decent roll to have a chance...and rolled triple 1, no damage at all. This meant with his last 2 Fury he couldn’t kill me and I got the last CP I needed. Win to me.

Game 7 vs Ric playing Khador – scenario where we had opposing zones and we had to control the one on our opponents side of the table.

Ric had a Karchev list and a very heavy infantry eSorscha list. We discussed how it was kind of touch and go for both of us since Saeryn would be excellent vs Karchev but not so great vs eSorscha, and that eLylyth would be useless vs Karchev but potentially devastating vs all the infantry in eSorscha’s list. Even though I was sure Ric would not take Karchev (he’s played my Saeryn list a few times in the past) I also knew that the Saeryn list still had a fighting chance against eSorscha so was much safer than facing a potential Karchev vs eLylyth match up.

I chose Saeryn, and Ric took eSorscha.

I went first moving cautiously, Ric ran the Winter Guard deathstar up and Iron Fleshed them. I luckily got disbinding off on them with the Black Frost Shard, removing Iron Flesh. The Swordsmen ran/charged, doing some damage and getting way up field. This allowed me to run my beasts up a little more safely. Next turn I feated and charged in with my beasts, managing to clear out a bunch of infantry and score a CP. Ric counter feated, managing to take out an Angelius and for the other one to Respawn with a combination of shooting and Greylord sprays.

I had lost a lot but had a chance to win by scoring the 2nd CP I needed. My Scythean killed some guys in the zone, Saeryn killed one more with a thrown knife, it was looking very good. The Swordsmen Abbot and Champion moved in to kill off the Kayazy boss for the win. The Champion missed with both his attacks, needing 8. The Abbot hit and killed! But the boss has Tough...and he rolled a 5. What looked like sure(ish) thing had just fallen apart and I had thrown everything forward, including Saeryn. Ric methodically killed off the Abbot, Champion and Scythean, clearing a path for Beast 09 to charge Saeryn. Beast used his imprint to gain boosted attack and damage roles vs living models, and charged Saeryn. His first attack missed, so did his second but with 4 Focus remaining the outcome was inevitable. He bought a third attack...and hit...dice down is called. Saeryn lives but I’m sure Ric has won on tiebreaker since he has so much stuff left until he reminds me that I have one CP. Definitely one of the craziest games I’ve played – what seemed like a definite win, turned in to what seemed like definite loss, becoming a win.

So in the end I went 5-2, picked up 6th place, and had a great time. Thanks to all my opponents.

p.s Saeryn is my favy fav, eLylyth is on the naughty chair.

Final Call to Arms Standings

The final Standings for Call to Arms 2011 can be found below;

1st Through 4th were determined through Playoffs determined by Round 6 and Sportsmanship/Painting by Peer Vote.

I live in Magical Christmas Land

A Different Kind of Monday Update today, The story of the Best Weekend Yet.

First off a Big Props to Sean for letting the travelling contingent invade his house and bask in the awesomeness of the 70's shag pad. Also, if you think Youtube is funny, its even funnier 10ft wide when you're half cut.

Second of all, an even bigger thanks to Sean's Mrs for not murdering him or us over the weekend. And hopefully for not Divorcing him this week.

On to the bit you want, pics.

After the best nights sleep I've had a a tournament (Big ups to Le Mansione du Lincolne) we rolled out to the venue and got a taste of the pairings.

I drew Daniel C from the 'Tron round one and we got down to it with me taking out the game after being blinded by the awesome of his Ret,

In fact the only criticism anyone could come up with over the weekend for Daniels Ret was the white was flat white... thats a pretty good commentary and he picked up best painted last time at Nicon for his work. Well done,

Also in round one some dramatic conclusion to the game including Scotty A once again stealing wins he has no right to,

But Karma is fair and this photo illustrates what happens when you try to make the shocked victory face with a broken rib...

To illustrate further, this was scotty's dead pile at the end of the game,

And this was his remaining models, unfortunately for John right where that diretroll is there was a borka before one cranked roll on a convection,

Next round was also fairly unfair for me, with the dicegods deciding the Battle of the Chris's when Parkin attempts a Pincusion on a heavy, fails the 7 on 3D6 and then fails with the second casting as well, needless to say my Heavy surviving on 2 boxes was not awesome for him. In fact it was so not awesome the cameraface he made before the game quite resembled the face after the game (minus Jimmy's rendition of Bluesteel in the background),

And for the third round of the day Alex M's Menoth which he repainted in the monday updates for C2A were threatening to derail my plans and net him even more beers,

Thankfully after some tight play from both sides and Haley not getting obliterated by a Vanquisher I got the damage on Harbinger to take her out after scrambling her Devout, Beer Damage : limited.

And in the final game of the day I picked up a game against the other champion of the last batch of Monday updates, Tom L with his eVlad led Khador force forcing me down to the wire,

And even though this photo was taken pre game, I think tom was pretty stoked being my closest game of the weekend,

Coming down to the wire Tom wanted eEiryss dead to end the threat to eVlad and remove the problem preventing him from having a chance to go toe to toe with the Stormclad. Unfortunately in moving up to swing and miss eEiryss Tom put Beast outside the control zone and punted the game,

After the days gaming much talk, both smack and catchup was had around both the sweet scoreboard,

And the tables,

Before retiring the Le Mansione for Beer and Pizza followed by some legendary Youtube which may be less funny when you are half cut but it'd still be sidesplitting then. (links below for those unable to make it)

Next morning after another night of being serenaded by the snoring of Italian Spiderman (come to events, meet Casey, you will understand) we showed up bright and early to game, having maintained a similarly pristine unbeaten record me and Scotty were undoubtedly being paired up for an epic battle. Somewhat less epic because I have never lost a game v Scotty, and he knows it.

 ORLY? Yes Really.
Picking up one of my favorite tables of the weekend (Seriously, awesome layout) we set up to crush each other with the weight of smack talk, and move some models.

But unfortunately for Scotty once again I smashed him. Yup,

And luckily enough next round would decide who would play off for 1st / 2nd with 4 players in neck and neck compettion for the slots I pulled my fellow Chris, Otton. Thankfully for me this was a day he was Not On. (Had to).

Eventually after a few pooper mistakes on both sides I managed to scalpel Goreshade out of what remained of Chris O's Army.

And on to the final where Scotty had once again managed to engineer himself a shot at the title belt,

However after a great nailbiter of a game starting off with a 100% perfect scatter 6" killing his eEiryss T1 and closing out with a mule missing the hit roll which would have given Scotty a 3D6 needing 14 to one shot pHaley I safely closed out the game with a Jack stomping Damiano again.

To all my opponents, everyone who traveled, everyone who turned up from the local meta and the guys selling pies a big thanks for making all to arms the best event yet. And again an even bigger thanks to Sean and his Mrs for being awesome.

While lifting hardware is nice, and the perennial trophies are very very nice its not the best thing about travelling for these weekends,

The best thing is catching up with all the geat bro's you meet playing this game and enjoying the smack talk, the games and the camaraderie over the weekend. No better exemplar can be found than the Ginger King and the Big Show taking out a dead tie for the Sports trophy and sharing the photo like bro's.

And to my main man Scotty, better luck next time, maybe you won't have to play me again.

Later in the week you'll get more pics, more thoughts and more stories but thats what I've got for you for now.

Coming up we have some big calendar events you need to know about and you should totally put the leg work in for a leave pass to;

Rallypoint: in mid November being 50pts with all the scenarios centering around your 'rally-points'. For this event you'll need to build two 40mm based objective 'flag' markers and you'll use them all weekend with the flags being what the best painted award will be handed out for. A great twist for this event and the Hamilton crowd is sure to put on a great time.

NZTC 2012: on Queens Birthday weekend will be the second annual Team Challenge. 35pts Teams of three will battle it out in individual games with the team taking the best of three picking up the win for the round. With a Team Feat and a focus on a great weekend of camaraderie and fun this event is not to be missed.

Events are always displayed down the left hand side of this very page so you can check back there for players packs and dates at leisure for everything going on you need to know about but above are my two picks for the best weekends you can get (and of course Call to Arms 2012, but thats a bit far off).

Until Next Time,

Keep it Classy. (I am so not Benesh)

Call to Arms 2011

Its all over!

I'll come back and upate with photos and the full stats soon, but here is the quick and dirty results.

1st Place - Chris Baker - Auckland (he was 3rd last year)
2nd Place - Scott Avery - Hamilton (he was 1st last year)
3rd Place - Mike Thorn - Wellington (only decided to play on Thursday to make up numbers...)

Artisan - Best Painted - Chris Baker (again)
Exemplar - Sportsmanship - A tie between Alex McEvan and Chris Townley!
Assassination Award - Daniel Conlon - 09:00! Two Hydra's under Vyros - nuf' said
Meat Grinder - Most enemy models worth of points killed - Mike Thorn
Cannon Fodder - Most models lost - Chris Otton (He plays Cryx, everything's expendable)
Swamp Gobbler - Last Place - Rikki Oliver

So in brief, once again Call to Arms was dominated by foreigners who just shuffled their names on to different trophies. Once again Chris Baker set the standard for painting. Seasoned Cryx player and PG Chris Otton shows how best to throw his undead legions under a bus, and Mike shows that Mercs know how to kill stuff. Alex and Chris T were super nice guys and the votes they got proved it, while Daniel shows how to kill someone in turn 2. Ouch!

More details/photos later.

Merc players took 2 of the top three places... just sayin'.

'Twas the night before Callmas

and all through the land,
not a gamer was resting,
certainly not his right hand.

*ahem*, with a paintbrush clutched feverishly between their fingers I might add!! :)

This fully painted lark has certainly motivated the usually artistically slack WarmaHordes community to churn out the splashes of colour! Check out Chris B's "fig a week" posts over the last month or so just to get an idea of what gems we have to look forward to tomorrow!

Call to Arms this year promises to be a great tourney with 26 regos and all 11 factions represented, I won't steal too much of Sean's thunder - he's got to have something to put in his AAR - but I thought I'd post a few badly lit pics of my painting effort which finally ended at 6pm this evening!

Those who know me know I play Cryx, I have dabbled in Legion but just didn't get on with them. I have a Circle Battlebox which I've promised myself will be painted and assembled after CTA.... Anyway, I wanted to try something different for this CTA, even though staying with Cryx, so I had to do a bit of digging to see which casters tend not to get much of a showing at tourneys. The first choice was obvious - the much maligned Goreshade the Bastard. Much of the grumbling about him seems to stem from a perception that his feat tends to get watered down at higher points games, but hey, a free unit of BaneThralls is a free unit of BaneThralls! The second choice was looking to be Goreshade the cursed but I'd used him at a tourney before and I didn't really want to run with the Prime and Epic versions of the same caster so I had another peruse of my collection and came across Venethrax. Whilst he's a beat stick against Beasts, a number of grumblers on various forums pick his feat as too defensive. SOLD!

so, in all their glory, the assembled hordes of Lich Lord Venethrax and Goreshade the Cursed:

the Liches in all their glory:
and a few highlights:
The Seether is a first foray into NMM and I'm rather pleased with it! Though, trying out a new technique when painting to a deadline is really not recommended!! :(

Gerlak takes the boys out for a stroll

Gorman - a dude so sneaky that cameras can't focus on him!

well, that's the splash of colour before it hits the table, looking forward to seeing everyone else at the event!

P.S. More people registered for WarmaHordes at CTA than did for 40K!! WOO HOO!! :)

cheers

The Other Chris :)

Hmm how many is that again....

Mercs got a little bit of lovin' in WRATH and I am happy with all the new toys I get to try out. But what to do first?

The choice is either Constance (Lets face it she's a Merc) or Damiano. So given my love of Steelheads the choice was easy. I look at Damiano's Teir and I cringe, slightly, when I consider just how many models I will be painting. Then the thought of my opponents face when 30 Halberdiers line up across the table and I say well that's 18 points. Pity they are FA 3.

I plan to write a series of articles showing how my Steelheads grow and give you a look at how he plays too.

So far I have 20 Painted Halberdiers, 12 Painted Riflemen, three painted Cavalry, Stannis and a load of Merc Jacks. Thanks to Chris R from Wellington I managed to get my hands on a few more Steelhead models, another 10 Halberdiers, 10 Riflemen and three Cavalry.

I am looking forward to Rociante and Rover releasing, they will be awesome sauce but for now the Manglers, Mules, Talons and Vanguards will have to do......

It is a good start, I'll admit, but we will see how well Damiano goes at different point levels with his tier all the way up to 50 points.

First job clean the models so I a can paint them, bring on the Simple Green. Soak, clean, paint.

Next I will have to modify the 10 Halberdiers, cause I love my full length Halberds

20 points.....(currently I am restricted to no Rocinate...sigh)

Damiano + 6 (Free Company)

Mule (8) 2
Min Riflemen (5) 7
Min Riflemen (5) 12
Min Halberdiers (4) 16
Min Halberdiers (4) 20

This points level seems a bit small but I am trying it out as we are playing Call to Arms next week in Wellington and if I was using Damiano's Tier this is how I would roll. The list is Tier two because I could not squeeze in Stannis Brocker. This gives me a 2" extension to my deployment zone which in this game can be huge.

I will be playing with this list soon and will give you a full run down on how she rolled, as well as a report from the epic encounter which is Call to Arms in Wellington........

...till then

Scotty

Monday Madness

Once again monday dawns bright and bleary eyed where we all wish we were not at work. on a positive note however we have painted toys to make us feel better.

I have unfortunately failed to finish my Stormstrider but I will count this one as a partial pass because it is a massive model, next week had better have a lot of painted models however because Call to Arms is just two weeks away and I need a painted army... of something.

Once again Welly champion Alex M smashes out a ton of menoth models,

Mark finishes off his Crusader for the week,

And even gets his son Cael painting toys. For 6 years old this is immense, I couldn't crayon between the lines at 6.

And Tom L continuing to be a champ finishes off his unit of Uhlahns and puts out a champion eSorscha,

Super stoked for Call to Arms in a couple of weeks but bricking myself about the painting. Really hope my bases arrive this afternoon.

Until next time,

Paint like you got a pair!

New Pig Warlock at Gencon?

I've seen the below art of what looks to be the new pig warlock floating around on the interwebs.

Then I spotted this photo on Lost Hemisphere's blog. The model is in the process of being painted (at Gencon) by PP painter Matt D.

Photo taken from Lost Hemisphere

*Edit

The completed model, confirmed as the new pig Warlock Sturm and Drang. Matt DiPietro is a pretty fast painter!

I Stand Defiant

Yesterday I came home to this;

And I think someone deserves due props for it.

Good old Dan @ Defiant Gaming has been my go to man for buying PP stock online for years now and has unfailingly delivered me my shit on time and in good condition.

I'd also like to mention this is not a sponsored or paid for shill, I am just super grateful that in the temporary stock shortage of PP product worldwide Dan is able to keep my orders flowing.

Now Defiant may be depending on currency vagaries a couple of bucks more expensive than competitors like Maelstrom but there are three reasons I pay my 5 bux;

  1. Real-time Inventory: Dan will not sell you something he doesn't have.
  2. Good Shipping: You get your stuff the week after he ships it to NZ.
  3. Prompt Shipping: Dan the man gets it out the door ASAP because he sells what he has on hand.

Lo and behold I come home after a Monday at work (are they ever pleasant?) and am instantly cheered up by my sweet loot,

Oh yes, that is two Stormstriders

And they come in Lots and Lots of Pieces

But Fear not, I have been playing some Gators. Proof Below;

Proof

And as great an opponent as Big Daryl is I'm just not feeling the Gators. At the best of times I find it hard to like playing with a Fury army and Gators being so far from my usual playstyle I am definitely not jiving well here.

Until next time,

I Hate Hordes.
